Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), a company under the Union Power Ministry, will invest ₹11,000 crore in Tamil Nadu over the next three years for energy efficiency and other projects.
Announcing the plan here today Piyush Goyal, Union Minister for Power, Coal, New & Renewable Energy and Mines, said the proposed energy efficiency plan is expected to help reduce the power bills for the consumers through use of energy efficient equipment.
EESL will seek to replace water pumps and do energy audit of all government buildings. It will invest money to bring down the consumption of power in the State, said Goyal.
He also discussed with the State Power Minister P Thangamani and officials of the Electricity Department on enhancing availability of solar agricultural pumps at attractive prices to farmers through the government.
Goyal asked the State government to expand their engagement with EESL for solar pump programme. “They will be discussing very soon with EESL to formulate plans for that,” he pointed out.
Lauding the State government’s thrust on the renewable energy sector, the Union Minister stated that measures were discussed to make the green energy sector in the State more robust as the prices have dropped significantly.
Replying to a question on green corridor for evacuation of renewable power, he said the Centre had already given substantial support to promote green energy corridor and it would be ready to extend any further investment required to evacuate more green power out of the State.
GST savings for Tangedco
Thanks to the GST and changes in the various cesses and tax laws that were prevalent before, the Neyveli Lignite Corporation will reduce the cost of power to the utility by about ₹500 crore. The savings will be due to reduction of taxes on coal and lignite after GST.
