Hyderabad Division of South Central Railway (SCR) has taken firm strides towards energy conservation as well as generation of power through renewable sources. The initiative commenced with Kacheguda station being provided with all energy efficient electrical appliances, which earned the station, the distinction of first A-1 category railway station on Indian Railway.

In this process, 1312 conventional lights have been replaced with ‘Light Emitting Diode’ (LED) lights, about 370 ceiling fans replaced with energy efficient ‘Brushless Direct Current’ (BLDC) fans and 12 ACs with energy efficient inverter ACs with five star rating.

Another major step has been taken by replacing all conventional lights by LED lights at all its 100 Railway stations and 176 LC gates.Rail Nilayam Building, the Zonal Headquarters of SCR, all 3048 conventional lights has been replaced with LED lights making it first zonal headquartes building on Indian Railways to have all LED lights.

This will result in reduction of connected load by 217.31 KW which translates to a saving of 8.55 lakh units per annum — comes about Rs 68.4 lakh.Mr Arun Kumar Jain, Divisional Railway Manager, Hyderabad Division, who was instrumental in shaping the plan for energy conservation on the division, has also devised a time frame for replacement of conventional lights by LED lights in railway colonies in the city and it is expected to be entirely completed by June 2018.

On power generation front, Hyderabad Division is presently generating 290 kWp of power using solar panels at Kurnool City, Gadwal, Basar, Kamareddy, Dharmabad stations and various service buildings. In addition, installation of 1.45 MWp on-grid solar plant work is under progress at Kacheguda, Indian Railway Institute Signal Engineering and Telecommuntion, Zonal Railway Training Institute, Lekha Bhawan in Secunderabad which will be commissioned by March 31, 2018.

The work on installation of Solar plant at Kacheguda railway station is in advance stage and will be completed by end of January 2018. Solar plants of 0.28MWp capacity are also planned at Kurnool City, Mahboobnagar & Nizamabad Railway Stations and the work is planned to be completed by December 2018, a SCR statement said here on Thursday.
