At the request of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol travelled this week to Delhi to brief the Indian leader on the global energy outlook, including India’s energy prospects and their implications for entire world. The discussion, held on Tuesday at the Prime Minister’s Residence, comes as India moves to the centre of the global energy stage. IEA analysis in its recently released India Energy Outlook shows that India is set to contribute more than any other country to the rise in global energy demand over the next 25 years.

Against the backdrop of low prices for oil, gas and coal, the participants in the 5 January meeting discussed Indian energy markets; energy security and investments; environmental challenges; the role of oil, gas coal and renewables; and the implications of India’s growing energy demand. In addition to Prime Minister Modi, participating Indian government officials included Minister of Finance Arun Jaitley, Vice Chairman of Niti Aayog Arvind Panagariya, Minister for Power, Coal and New and Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal, and Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan.
