Solar power plant to be commissioned in nine months
Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) entered into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for 2.3 MWp ((Mega Watt peak, a solar power measure in photo-voltaic industry) on Monday, raising the total solar power generation proposed by the Kochi Metro Rail project to 6.3 MWp.

The agreement with AMP Solar India Private Limited deals with power that will be generated by a ground mounted solar plant on the land available at KMRL’s Muttom depot. The PPA was signed by Thiruman Archunan, Director Projects, KMRL, and Shriprakash Rai, Director–Distributed Generation, AMP Solar, in the presence of A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, MD, KMRL, said an official release.

The plant will be commissioned in nine months’ time and the power generated by the plant will be connected to the power distribution system of KMRL. The plant is capable of producing 34.3 lakh units (KWH) of electric energy per year and KMRL will be able to save about ₹63 lakh per year in terms of energy cost directly, in addition to indirect benefits in terms of savings on fossil fuels and reduction in pollution.

RESCO model

KMRL has adopted the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model for its solar projects, where the vendor would undertake the investment as well as the operation and maintenance of the plant, and KMRL would purchase power from the vendor. The agreement is on the condition that KMRL will purchase solar power at the lowest rate quoted by the successful bidder for the next 25 years.
