ALBUQUERQUE: Sandia National Laboratory is getting $10.5 million from the Department of Energy to design a cheaper way to gather solar energy.

Sandia Labs will work to improve a special system that uses mirrors to reflect and concentrate the sun’s beams onto a receiver on a tower.

The heat is absorbed by either a liquid, gas or solid and stopped or used immediately to generate electricity.

The aim is to raise the heat levels in order to increase efficiency and lower the cost of solar energy.
