Torrefaction is a partial carbonization process at temperatures between 475 – 575°F in a low oxygen environment. On November 17th Vega Biofuels Inc. announced that it has filed a Provisional Patent Application for its generation four (G4) torrefaction machine. Vega recently announced that its G/4 torrefaction machine increases the manufacturing capacity. The company claims that portions of the process for the new machine are unique in the current marketplace and therefore, filed the Provisional Patent Application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office under the title “Method and Apparatus for Torrefying Biomass.” According to the patent, the new machine includes a pre-dryer that partially dries the biomass prior to the torrefaction process. This step increases the capacity of the machine by approximately 25%

Gevo Inc. recently produced the very first cellulosic renewable jet fuel that is used on commercial flights. The company produced over a thousand gallon of Alcohol-to-Jet fuel by altering renewable isobutanol which was made from cellulosic sugars derived from wood waste by using its patented technologies. Alaska Airlines is expected to run the first commercial flight in the next few months by using the cellulosic jet fuel. “Gevo’s production of this cellulosic ATJ removes all doubt that cellulosic sugars can be successfully converted into isobutanol using Gevo’s technology. “Gevo’s ATJ technology then reliably converts isobutanol into renewable jet fuel, regardless of the sugar source. I’m looking forward to seeing this fuel power an Alaska Airlines flight in the near future,” said Gevo’s chief executive officer Dr. Patrick Gruber.
