Bharathidasan University is all set to commission the 500-KWp Ground Mounted Grid Interactive Solar PV Power Plant on its main campus. The plant has been established at an estimate of Rs.4.85 crore on five acres of land in the university.

The work was awarded to the State owned Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited’s Electronics Division, Bengaluru. A Memorandum of Understanding was exchanged between V.M. Muthukumar, Vice-Chancellor, and a senior official of BHEL in May, 2015. As per the agreement, the BHEL has almost completed the task of setting up the power plant in the open land near the entrance of the university. A total of 1052 panels were erected to tap the solar energy, which is abundantly available in the campus. It has set up facilities for transmitting the generated power to the user end. The unit would partly meet the power requirement of the university.

The BHEL, which was entrusted with the task of design, engineering, optimization and panel construction, has tested the functioning of the plant, which is said to be satisfactory.Similarly, suggestions and modifications recommended by a team of senior officials of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) that inspected the university to study the setting up of solar power plant have been taken into consideration.

A senior official of the university said that the facility was ready for generating power. It would be a milestone in the history of the university that intended to tap as much non-conventional energy as much as possible. Besides reducing the electricity charges to a great extent, it would showcase the importance of tapping naturally available energy in easy and cost-effective ways.Meanwhile, film Director Bharathiraja visited the solar power plant at the university on Thursday. Mr. Muthukumar, who took him to the facility, explained in detail about the advantages of the system.
