District Joint Collector J. Niranjan on Saturday inaugurated the district’s first solar system installed by by Freyr Energy at Zilla Parishad Boys High School here.

The 5Kw on-grid system will help the school cut energy costs almost up to 60% and the surplus energy produced during the weekends and holidays would be utilised by the grid and the amount in lieu of it would be credited to the school’s electricity bill.

A Hyderabad-based full service solar provider, Freyr Energy, has its operations in India and Ghana and its products range from rooftop systems, petrol pumps, solar water pumps to micro-grids. The company has installed over 850 solar systems across 14 States in the country impacting over 62,000 lives in rural India and also in Ghana during the last three years.

Speaking on the occasion, Joint Collector J. Niranjan said they had a vision is to be the first solar-powered district in Telangana. Such solar systems would not only contribute to environmental sustainability in the district but would also save costs of the schools. The money saved could be utilised to improve education infrastructure, he stated.

Managing director of Freyr Energy Saurabh Marda said they were proud to drive the initiative of the district administration to energise the Zilla Parishad Boys High School with solar power. “It’s only a pilot project and the first of the many systems that will be installed in Wanaparthy district,” he said adding that they were ready to work with the district administration to electrify other schools and government institutions with solar systems.

The solar projects would also help students understand the importance of clean energy and energy efficiency at a very young age, lead their communities to adopt environmentally responsible practices, Mr. Marda hoped.
