Tangedco would work closely with Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) in making their existing as well as upcoming offices as green buildings to reduce consumption of electricity, said a senior Tangedco official.

Appreciating the efforts of IGBC at a workshop on ‘Building Efficiency Accelerator (BEA)’ in Coimbatore on Thursday, chief engineer of Tangedco, Coimbatore, T Haldorai said the greening of Tangedco offices would be taken up across the state. He said making every structure a green building by incorporating features that are not power-intensive, would bring down energy consumption across the nation.

Haldorai said that Tangedco was also focussing on energy generation through non-renewable sources. He said 37% of total energy produced by Tangedco last year came through renewable energy sources. In the coming years, Tangedco would further accelerate the percentage of energy generated through renewable energy sources, he said.

He lauded the city corporation for partnering with IGBC to reduce power consumption in the city by up to one MW through greening buildings. The civic body has already started working on the project. To start with, schools run by the civic body would be transformed into green buildings.

Vice chairman of CII, Coimbatore zone, M Ramesh, said that Coimbatore has more than 35 IGBC certified world class and landmark projects including IT parks, factory buildings, schools, residential and office buildings.

Rajesh B Lund, chairman of IGBC Coimbatore chapter and co – chairman Col A Sridharan were present. A book on green buildings of India was released by Haldorai at the workshop.
