Imphal: An 8kW grid-connected rooftop solar power plant was installed by Manipur deputy chief minister Yumnam Joykumar Singh in Imphal West on Monday to provide power to Uripok here.

It was installed at United Friends Library and Club, Lamboikhongnangkhong.

This is the eighth solar power plant installed in Uripok Assembly constituency. The first was installed on May 16.

Joykumar said, with increasing population, requirements of energy have also been increasing by the day. All conventional sources of energy have limitations in power generation and the only way to replace such sources would be renewable ones like solar, wind and tidal wave which are abundantly available.

Joykumar said if rooftop solar panels are installed, power for street lamps and domestic purposes can be easily generated. He said an assessment should be made to work out how much energy can be tapped through solar power in the state.

He said 35 sites have been identified in Uripok constituency to be inaugurated in the first phase. Community halls, clubs, river banks and other public places will be covered in the first phase and will be completed by June 30.

Manipur Renewable Energy Development Agency director L. Manglem Singh said the grid-connected rooftop solar project, which was started in 2016, is an ambitious one through which power generated from solar power plants can be connected to power grids in the state. He said power tariff in Manipur is low compared to other states but it has been revised every year and will increase further.

Manglem Singh said under this policy, power generated by the plant will be used and the excess power can be sold to Manipur State Power Distribution Company Limited which in turn can generate revenue.
