Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) is to set up another 5 mw solar power plant as part of its efforts to conserve energy in addition to its existing 10 mw solar power project which is under progress.

VPT is likely to begin the 5 mw project in the new fiscal.

Confirming this to TOI, VPT chairman MT Krishna Babu said tenders will soon be called for the 5 mw solar power project. “At present, we are focussing on the completion of the existing 10 mw solar power project,” he said.

Krishna Babu further said he met AP Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (APEPDCL) CMD MM Nayak to fix a temporary commercial operation date (COD) for the 6.25 mw portion of the solar power plant out of the total 10 mw. “APEPDCL positively agreed to fix the COD and we hope that the commercial operation of the 6.25 mw would start soon,” Krishna Babu said.

When asked about the balance 3.75 mw, he said the building part of the 3.75 mw solar panels would be completed by December this year.

The contract for the project to the tune of Rs 60 crore has been awarded to Jakson Engineers Limited, Noida, that would maintain it for seven years.
