The ministry said in a statement the bids were being examined and evaluated according to the government’s competition criteria, which favours those who build a plant bigger than the obligatory 50 MW and sell more cheaply to the local distributor.

New Delhi: Albania received six bids on Monday from companies interested in building its first solar power plant and a commission is now evaluating them to determine qualifiers for the next stage, the Energy Ministry said.

A spokesman for the ministry declined to name the companies but told Reuters the were U.S. and European bidders.

The ministry said in a statement the bids were being examined and evaluated according to the government’s competition criteria, which favours those who build a plant bigger than the obligatory 50 MW and sell more cheaply to the local distributor.

It considered the investment an important milestone since “it would not only increase electricity output but also promote renewable resources”.

With more than 90 percent of Albania’s power being produced from rivers and a newly built power plant not functioning, the Socialist government of Prime Minister Edi Rama wants to install 120 megawatts of solar and 70 MW of wind power capacity by 2020.
