Brazil’s Energy Research Office of Empresa de Pesquisa Energética (EPE) has registered 114.86 GW new energy capacity for both A-5 and A-6 auctions to be held on September 16, 2022 out of which solar capacity accounts for 55.82 GW.

Solar PV is eligible to participate only in the A-5 auction for which the agency has registered a total of 2,044 projects representing 83 GW capacity. It has the largest share compared to 23.15 GW wind, 1.51 GW hydropower, 1.32 GW biogas and coal, 1 GW biomass, and 180 MW municipal solid waste (MSW).

With registered capacity in, the agency will now analyze projects for technical qualification post which shortlisted companies will be eligible to enter the auction.

EPE says more than 61% of registered projects for both the auctions chose to take advantage of documentation from the previous auctions. So, calculating only unique ventures registered for both the auctions, a total of 2,104 projects with 114.86 GW was registered. However, overall the number was 139 GW from 2,766 projects registered.

The Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) had announced the date for both the auctions in April 2022
