Drawing on its global and regional energy expertise, DNV GL is to design and develop a database and energy automation system to help the UAE Ministry of Energy collect information on energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from various sectors and sources across the UAE’s seven emirates. The collected information will enable the UAE Ministry of Energy to understand how much energy is being consumed and identify the sources and uses behind it.

In 2010 The United Arab Emirates announced its UAE Vision 2021, which aims to make the UAE one of the best countries in the world by the Golden Jubilee of the Union in 2021. It is anticipated that the project can help the UAE take important steps towards meeting its stated goal of having clean renewable energy sources contributing 24% of the total energy mix by 2021 .

DNV GL’s automated system intends to allow the UAE to create baselines on energy use, in order to determine and identify trends and patterns of energy consumption and levels of greenhouse gas emissions over a number of years. Through this information, the UAE Ministry of Energy will then be able to develop policies and regulations to reduce the consumption of energy and greenhouse gas emissions across the Emirates.

With no previous automated method in place to collect energy information, DNV GL will work closely with stakeholders across the United Arab Emirates to ensure the smooth execution of the Ministry of Energy project. During this time, DNV GL will aid in streamlining processes by developing a new set of templates that will be consolidated and simplified, enabling stakeholders to upload the collected data onto the system automatically where it is easily accessible to all stakeholders involved in the project. Ultimately the new automated database opens up the chance of more frequent measuring of energy consumption across the UAE.

The outputs of this database will ensure that the UAE will be able to efficiently and accurately report its energy consumption and GHG emissions to organisations such as UNFCCC, OPEC, GCC, IEA, USGS, and to the Prime Minister’s office of the UAE.

Dan Newman, Senior Energy Consultant, DNV GL: “It is an honour to be working with the UAE Ministry of Energy and to be the chosen partner. This project will enable us to work closely with the Ministry of Energy in helping the nation to realise the Vision 2021, and to further enhance its international standing on energy management.”
