Power generation from conventional and renewable sources increased by 6.25 percent to 1,038.90 billion units (BUs) in the April-January period of current fiscal compared to the year-ago period.

“The power generation grew by 6.25 percent at 1038.90 BUs in April-January this fiscal compared to 977.81 BUs in same period year ago,” a power ministry official said. “Strong focus on renewables is driving up total electricity generation figures,” the official said. The growth in power generation excluding from renewable sources was 5.04 percent in April-January FY2016-17, the official said further.

During April-January, power generation from renewables like solar and wind rose by 26.32 percent to 70.12 BUs compared to 55.51 BUs in the 10-month period year ago, the official stated. The country’s electricity generation from conventional sources rose to 968.42 BUs in the 10-month period this fiscal from 922.29 BUs in the year-ago period, a report by the Central Electricity Authority said. India generated 95.33 BUs from sources like thermal, hydro and nuclear in January this year, up 3.48 percent compared to 92.12 BUs output in same month year ago, the report said. As per the report, India was targeting electricity generation of 101.06 BUs from conventional sources during the month of January 2017.
