Showa Shell Sekiyu and Solar Frontier to Participate in Saudi Arabian Collaboration, the “Joint Technical Corporation Project for Hydrogen Production by Splitting Hydrogen Sulfide with Sunlight”
Showa Shell Sekiyu K.K. and Solar Frontier K.K. announced today their participation in the “Joint Technical Cooperation Project for Hydrogen Production by Splitting Hydrogen Sulfide with Sunlight”, led by the King Abdullah University of Science & Technology (KAUST) and the Japan Cooperation Center Petroleum (JCCP). The signing ceremony was held on June 21 between KAUST and JCCP, for a three-year period that started in April 2017.
Showa Shell Sekiyu will provide its know-how on electrochemistry, built on through its research on artificial photosynthesis, at its Central Research Laboratory in Japan. CIS thin-film solar panels will be provided by Solar Frontier, the world’s largest provider of CIS solar energy solutions, which is a 100% owned subsidiary of Showa Shell Sekiyu.
The byproduct gases in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s oil and gas fields contain high concentrations of toxic hydrogen sulphide. For safe and efficient crude oil production, the project aims to develop a technology that electrochemically decomposes the hydrogen sulphide for detoxification and hydrogen extraction. CIS thin-film panels will be used to generate power for the decomposition process, thereby contributing to promote the use of renewable energy.
Through this joint project, Showa Shell Sekiyu and Solar Frontier aim to help promote the long-standing friendship between Japan and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, while also expanding the application range of their standout CIS thin-film technology.
