Spl Poilce stations to be setup in UP to curb power theft : Goyal

In order to put a check on the growing incidents of power theft and pilferage, the Uttar Pradesh Government may soon setup dedicated police stations and vigilance squads against the menace, the Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal said here today.”The 24×7 power supply can only be possible when people pay their bills on time and refrain from stealing electricity,” the Power Minister said.Addressing a press conference in connection with the completion of three years of the NDA regime, Mr Goyal said this will be done probably in the line of Gujarat model as the tough measures would be essential to fight the power theft menace and regulate effective supply of electricity in the state.He said that he has already held talks on these issues with the UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

”The State Government is serious about the menaces of illegal connections and power theft practiced even by the well-to-do sections of the society, ” he said.Listing out various achievements of the Government in the power and renewable energy sectors in the last three years, Mr Goyal said: ”Over the next two years, the Government will move towards achieving 24 x 7 affordable ‘Clean Power for All’ .He said during the last three years, the Government has electrified 13,511 villages across the country even as the success of LED programme has emerged as a model to give thrust to the energy efficiency.”To ensure light in not every village but every home, the Government has set the target of electrifying every household by August 2022.”The Minister also said that there was no shortage of coal in the country and maintained that in the power sector the Government of India was committed to the regional cooperation with South Asian neighbours like Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan.Referring to the initiatives for renewable energy, the Minister said the measures taken by the Government will ensure the consumers to save on electricity bills by a total of Rs 12,000-cr.UNI APS SNU 1520
