NEW DELHI: To ensure a robust charging infrastructure in Delhi for Electric Vehicles, the Delhi government has decided to set up at least one charging point for every 15 vehicles in the next three years.

Currently, there are over 2,000 public chargers in Delhi for more than 1.6 lakh EVs registered in the city. Senior Delhi government officials said the number of chargers is likely to reach 4,000 by the end of the year while the total number of EVs — two-wheelers, three-wheelers, cars, and buses combined — is estimated to cross 1.8 lakh.

“When we launched the EV policy, we aimed to have a charger within three kilometres, which we have achieved. We are now going to launch our action plan for the next three years where we aim to have a charger for every 15 EVs registered in Delhi,” said Dialogue and Development Commission (DDC) of Delhi vice chairman Jasmine Shah.

DDC is going to organise the fourth Delhi EV Forum in collaboration with RMI India on August 22 where it will come up with a report on its achievements in the EV sector, unveil the action plan for the next three years and also felicitate the stakeholders for their contribution in developing the EV ecosystem in the national capital with Switch Delhi EV Awards.

Though 90% of people charge their EVs either at homes or offices, Shah said it was important to provide support to EV buyers with strong charging infrastructure in public places. He further said that the ‘One Delhi’ mobile application, will not just have the data and location of chargers installed by the government agencies and in public-private partnership but will also show free chargers available in the city.

“We will also add a feature later where vehicle owners will be able to make online bookings and payments,” Shah said.

The Delhi government has also invited recommendations from people to felicitate the stakeholders who have contributed to developing the EV eco-system in the city.

“The (Switch Delhi) awards will cover 12 distinct categories and will be given to entities who have helped in strengthening the EV ecosystem in Delhi through EV sales, deployment of charging/swapping infrastructure, and promoting electrification of fleets and last-mile delivery services,” Shah said. The awards, he further explained, will be presented to entities, not individuals. They will be based on the entity’s performance within the geographical area of the NCT of Delhi, she said.

Those who made significant contributions will also be given slots in the forum to give a presentation on their work in developing the EV ecosystem.
