In Detail : Coal India Limited (CIL) has taken a significant step toward diversifying its energy portfolio by establishing a new subsidiary focused on renewable energy development in Rajasthan. This move reflects CIL’s growing commitment to support India’s transition to clean energy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

The subsidiary has been formed in collaboration with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RRVUNL), the state-run power generation utility. The joint venture aims to leverage both organizations’ strengths to develop large-scale renewable energy projects across the state.

In the newly formed company, CIL holds a 74% equity stake, while RRVUNL owns the remaining 26%. The entity has been set up as a private limited company, starting with an initial capital of ₹10 lakh. This structure allows operational flexibility while maintaining strong public sector backing.

The primary focus of the new subsidiary will be the development of solar and wind energy projects. Rajasthan, with its vast solar potential and favorable wind corridors, offers an ideal environment for scaling up renewable installations. These projects will contribute to both state and national renewable energy capacity targets.

This initiative is part of Coal India’s broader strategy to transition into a diversified energy company. As the world moves toward decarbonization, CIL is seeking to reduce its reliance on coal-based revenues and increase investments in sustainable energy infrastructure.

By forming this joint venture, CIL and RRVUNL are not only expanding renewable capacity but also fostering regional development and employment opportunities. The collaboration is expected to accelerate green energy adoption in Rajasthan and set a model for other public sector partnerships in clean energy.
