In Detail : The Bairabi–Sairang railway line in Mizoram has incorporated eco-friendly infrastructure by installing LED lighting and solar power systems in its tunnels. Spanning 51.38 kilometers, the line includes 48 tunnels now equipped with energy-efficient lighting, offering a sustainable solution for illuminating long stretches within difficult terrain.
In addition to LED lights, solar energy systems have been integrated to reduce dependence on conventional electricity sources. These systems are already operational, and there are plans to set up a dedicated solar power plant to further support the energy requirements of the railway line. This approach marks a significant step in sustainable rail development.
To enhance safety, engineers have also installed low-smoke, non-toxic cables within the tunnels. These materials are designed to minimize toxic emissions during emergencies, helping protect passengers and railway personnel. The installation meets high safety standards, especially important given the region’s challenging weather conditions.
The project, sanctioned in 2008–09, overcame major construction hurdles, including prolonged monsoons, frequent landslides, and complex mountainous terrain. Connecting Aizawl to Silchar, the railway line ends the region’s dependence on road transport alone. With multiple tunnels and bridges, the project significantly improves travel and trade opportunities for Mizoram, contributing to economic growth and regional development.
