In Detail : China has announced an ambitious plan to accelerate the integration of artificial intelligence into its energy sector. The roadmap, released by the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration, is designed to strengthen energy security, improve efficiency, and support the nation’s transition to a low-carbon economy. It marks a decisive step toward smarter, more resilient energy systems.

The plan outlines the deployment of at least five industry-specific AI models tailored to different segments of the energy sector, from state grids to coal, oil, and renewable generation. In addition, ten demonstration projects will be developed to test new ideas, while 100 practical AI application scenarios will be explored to ensure wide-ranging adoption.

By 2027, these measures are expected to deliver significant technological breakthroughs that will reshape energy operations. By 2030, the government aims for China’s AI-enabled energy systems to achieve global leadership standards. This includes aligning computing power with electricity supply to improve forecasting, grid management, and overall operational safety in an increasingly complex energy landscape.

AI will play a crucial role in addressing the challenges posed by renewable energy variability. High-precision forecasting tools, advanced grid planning, and intelligent construction management will all contribute to making energy delivery more efficient. These innovations will help balance supply and demand, integrate renewable sources more smoothly, and strengthen the reliability of the power system.

State Grid Corporation is already leading in this transition, having launched the world’s first trillion-parameter AI model specifically designed for the power industry. It also released a white paper to guide the “AI + power” transformation, which focuses on systematically improving power production, transmission, and consumption through intelligent technologies.

Chinese tech firms are also becoming central to this strategy. DeepSeek, a large language model, is being used by major state-owned enterprises to analyze seismic data, optimize infrastructure maintenance, and improve intelligent scheduling. These applications are enabling real-time decision-making and more efficient use of resources across the energy sector.

Experts believe the convergence of AI and energy could give rise to trillion-yuan-scale industries in the coming decades. These include solar, wind, integrated energy systems, and zero-carbon smart grids. The combination of cutting-edge computing and renewable energy expansion positions China to shape the global clean energy market in profound ways.

To meet AI’s own rising energy demands, China is strategically linking new data centers to renewable energy bases in regions like Qinghai and Xinjiang. This approach allows for real-time coordination between massive energy consumption and renewable generation, making both sectors more sustainable and reducing strain on the national grid.

In essence, the new roadmap envisions a future where China’s energy system is smarter, greener, and more efficient, powered by AI at every stage.
