In Short : The government has approved ₹26,000 crore worth of green energy transmission projects to support large-scale solar power generation. These projects aim to evacuate electricity from renewable energy zones in states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Ladakh. The move will strengthen India’s power grid, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and help meet its ambitious clean energy and climate goals.

In Detail : The Indian government has granted environmental clearance for transmission infrastructure projects worth ₹26,000 crore. These projects are crucial for evacuating solar power from renewable energy zones and ensuring smooth integration into the national grid. This step is aligned with India’s broader climate and energy transition goals.

The approved transmission corridors will primarily serve high-potential solar energy regions such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Ladakh. These areas have seen major investments in solar parks and renewable energy clusters but require dedicated transmission capacity to deliver power efficiently across states.

These new transmission lines will be of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) and alternating current (AC) types. They are designed to handle the large volumes of electricity expected from upcoming solar and wind projects, reducing bottlenecks and improving reliability across the power system.

The investment is part of the Green Energy Corridor Phase-II and forms a key component of the national plan to reach 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. It also supports the recently announced plan to add 50 GW of renewable energy capacity annually until the end of the decade.

By enabling better connectivity from renewable energy-rich zones to load centers, the initiative will also reduce curtailment risks for solar developers and make clean power more accessible for consumers. It is expected to boost investor confidence and speed up project execution.

This clearance comes at a time when India is ramping up efforts to transition from coal-based power to greener alternatives. Efficient transmission infrastructure is vital to realize the full potential of renewable energy and meet the nation’s sustainability commitments under global climate agreements.
