India Sees Record Renewable Energy Surge as Coal Use Declines in 2025 – EQ
In Short : India’s renewable power output grew 24.4% in the first half of 2025, reaching 134.43 billion kWh—the fastest pace in three years. Wind and solar led the surge, with renewables hitting a record 17% share in June. Coal-fired generation dropped nearly 3% as demand slowed. India is projected to add 32 GW of renewable capacity this year.
In Detail : India’s renewable energy generation witnessed its fastest growth in three years, rising by 24.4% in the first half of 2025. The total output reached 134.43 billion kilowatt-hours, driven primarily by the rapid expansion of wind and solar capacity across the country.
This surge marks a significant milestone in India’s transition to clean energy. Renewables, excluding hydropower, accounted for a record 17% of total electricity generation in June. This growing share reflects the country’s ongoing push toward meeting its climate and energy targets.
At the same time, coal-fired power generation declined by nearly 3% during the same period. The drop was largely due to slower growth in overall electricity demand, which has allowed renewable sources to play a more dominant role in the power mix.
The shift indicates a structural change in India’s energy landscape, with clean energy becoming more competitive and reliable. Favorable weather conditions and improved grid integration also contributed to the increased renewable output.
India is expected to add 32 gigawatts of new renewable energy capacity in 2025 alone. This would further strengthen the country’s position as one of the world’s fastest-growing renewable energy markets.
With continued investments and supportive policies, India is on track to accelerate its clean energy transition, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and moving closer to its net-zero emissions goals.
