In Detail : Kondareddypalli, situated in Vangoor mandal of Nagarkurnool district, Telangana, has become South India’s first fully solar-powered village. This milestone was achieved under the state’s Green Energy Mission, aimed at promoting renewable energy adoption and reducing carbon footprints in rural communities. The project represents a significant step toward sustainable rural development.

The initiative covers 514 residential homes and 11 government buildings, all fitted with solar power systems. Each household has been provided with a 3 kW rooftop solar panel, while public buildings collectively have a 60 kW capacity. This brings the village’s total installed solar capacity to 1,500 kW.

Solar installations in the village not only meet local energy needs but also contribute surplus electricity to the state grid. In September alone, approximately 100,000 units were fed into the grid, generating nearly ₹5 lakh in revenue for residents. The local power distribution company compensates households at ₹5.25 per unit.

Kondareddypalli’s transformation reflects Telangana’s broader efforts to empower rural communities through sustainable energy solutions. The initiative is expected to serve as a model for other villages, demonstrating the tangible benefits of renewable energy adoption for households, public institutions, and the local economy.

The success of the project highlights the potential of solar energy in rural electrification.
