L&T and NVIDIA Forge Landmark Alliance to Develop India’s First Sovereign Gigawatt-Scale AI Infrastructure Hub – EQ
In Short : Larsen & Toubro has partnered with NVIDIA to establish a sovereign, gigawatt-scale AI data centre ecosystem under the IndiaAI Mission. The collaboration combines advanced AI computing platforms with large-scale engineering expertise to create next-generation infrastructure capable of supporting enterprise, industrial, and government AI workloads, strengthening India’s digital sovereignty and positioning the country as a global AI powerhouse.
In Detail : Engineering and infrastructure major Larsen & Toubro has entered into a strategic collaboration with global AI technology leader NVIDIA to build a sovereign gigawatt-scale AI data centre ecosystem in India. The initiative is aligned with the Government’s IndiaAI Mission, which aims to accelerate domestic artificial intelligence capabilities and reduce dependence on overseas computing infrastructure.
The partnership envisions the creation of large-scale, AI-ready data centre facilities designed to support next-generation computing workloads. These facilities will be engineered to deliver high-density GPU performance, advanced networking, and scalable storage solutions capable of handling complex AI model training, inference, and industrial automation applications.
L&T will leverage its extensive experience in infrastructure development, power systems, engineering procurement and construction, and data centre design to execute the physical and operational build-out. NVIDIA, on the other hand, will deploy its advanced AI computing stack, including cutting-edge GPUs, high-performance processors, accelerated networking technologies, and enterprise AI software platforms.
A phased development approach is expected, beginning with the expansion of GPU clusters at L&T’s data centre facilities and gradually scaling toward gigawatt-level capacity. The infrastructure is being designed with long-term scalability in mind, allowing incremental expansion as AI demand from enterprises, research institutions, and public sector agencies grows.
One of the defining features of the initiative is its sovereign architecture. By ensuring that critical AI workloads, datasets, and models are hosted within India, the project strengthens digital sovereignty and enhances data security. This approach also aligns with national priorities related to secure digital infrastructure and resilient supply chains.
The collaboration is poised to support AI adoption across multiple sectors, including manufacturing, healthcare, financial services, energy, logistics, and smart cities. Large-scale AI infrastructure will enable businesses to transition from pilot-level experimentation to full production deployments, unlocking productivity gains and fostering innovation at scale.
From an economic perspective, the project represents a major infrastructure investment that could generate significant employment opportunities across engineering, operations, and technology domains. It also signals India’s intent to compete globally in high-performance computing and advanced AI research.
Energy efficiency and sustainability are expected to be central to the data centre design, with considerations for renewable power integration and advanced cooling systems. As AI workloads are energy intensive, optimised power management and grid integration will play a crucial role in ensuring long-term operational viability.
Overall, the L&T–NVIDIA partnership marks a transformative step in India’s AI infrastructure journey. By combining world-class AI technology with large-scale engineering execution, the initiative aims to establish India as a self-reliant, globally competitive hub for artificial intelligence innovation and digital transformation.
