In Detail : NLC India Renewables (NIRL), a subsidiary of NLC India under the Ministry of Coal, has partnered with Mahatma Phule Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Technology (MAHAPREIT) to form a joint venture company (JVC) aimed at developing 2,000 MW of renewable energy projects across Maharashtra.
These will include solar, wind, hybrid, floating solar, battery energy storage systems (BESS), pumped storage, and solar parks. The Ministry of Coal announced that the collaboration will initially focus on 500 MW in Phase I, with an eventual target of scaling the capacity to 5,000 MW. The equity distribution within the JVC will see NIRL holding a 74 percent stake, while MAHAPREIT will retain 26 percent.
MAHAPREIT will facilitate land identification, acquisition, and assist in developing the power evacuation system. NIRL will lead in preparing detailed project reports, mobilizing funds, and managing project execution. Power generated will be sold through a mix of competitive bidding and regulated mechanisms to DISCOMs, government bodies, and commercial and industrial (C&I) consumers.
This strategic partnership marks a significant step in accelerating clean energy development in Maharashtra and aligning with India’s broader renewable energy transition goals.
