In Short : NTPC Renewable Energy Limited has signed an agreement with SECI to supply 70,000 MTPA of green ammonia. The pact supports India’s green hydrogen mission and decarbonization of fertilizer and industrial sectors. The initiative will enable renewable-powered ammonia production, reduce fossil fuel dependence, and strengthen long-term clean energy supply chains across the country.

In Detail : NTPC Renewable Energy Limited has signed a green ammonia supply agreement with Solar Energy Corporation of India for 70,000 metric tonnes per annum. The agreement marks a significant step toward scaling green hydrogen derivatives and advancing India’s transition to low-carbon industrial fuels and sustainable fertilizer production.

The supply agreement is part of broader efforts to promote green ammonia as a clean alternative to conventional ammonia produced using fossil fuels. Green ammonia is generated using green hydrogen derived from renewable energy sources, eliminating carbon emissions associated with traditional production methods and supporting industrial decarbonization initiatives.

Under this arrangement, NTPC Renewable Energy will produce green ammonia using renewable electricity, integrating solar and possibly wind energy to power electrolyzers. The hydrogen produced through electrolysis will then be combined with nitrogen to manufacture ammonia, creating a fully renewable supply chain aligned with India’s clean energy objectives.

The agreement is expected to support sectors such as fertilizers, chemicals, and heavy industries that rely on ammonia as a feedstock. By replacing grey ammonia with green ammonia, industries can significantly reduce carbon emissions while maintaining operational efficiency. This transition also contributes to lowering the carbon footprint of agricultural supply chains.

The partnership also reinforces the role of SECI in aggregating demand and facilitating long-term offtake agreements. Such structured procurement mechanisms provide certainty to project developers, encouraging investment in large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production facilities across the country.

This development aligns with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to position the country as a global hub for green hydrogen production and exports. Agreements of this nature help build early demand, accelerate infrastructure development, and improve the commercial viability of green hydrogen-based fuels.

The project will also contribute to strengthening domestic energy security. Green ammonia production relies on renewable electricity instead of imported natural gas, reducing exposure to global fuel price volatility. This shift supports long-term energy independence while promoting sustainable industrial growth.

In addition to environmental benefits, the agreement is expected to stimulate investment in electrolyzers, renewable power capacity, and storage infrastructure. These investments will create an integrated ecosystem for green hydrogen and ammonia production, supporting job creation and technological advancement in emerging clean energy sectors.

The signing of the 70,000 MTPA green ammonia supply pact underscores NTPC Renewable Energy’s growing focus on green hydrogen derivatives. As more such agreements are finalized, large-scale deployment of green ammonia will accelerate, supporting decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors and strengthening India’s clean energy transition.
