In Short : The Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) has signed an MoU with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to collaborate on green hydrogen production and research. The partnership aims to develop sustainable hydrogen technologies, promote industrial applications, and support Punjab’s transition toward clean energy, reducing carbon emissions and enhancing energy self-reliance in the region.

In Detail : The Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, to advance green hydrogen production and technology development in Punjab. The collaboration marks a key milestone in the state’s clean energy mission and its commitment to sustainable industrial growth.

Through this partnership, PEDA and IISc aim to jointly explore innovative methods for green hydrogen generation using renewable energy sources such as solar and biomass. The focus will be on developing cost-effective, scalable technologies suited to Punjab’s energy ecosystem and industrial landscape.

Officials from both institutions highlighted that the collaboration will emphasize research, development, and demonstration of hydrogen-based energy systems. It will also promote local manufacturing of components and support skill development initiatives to create a workforce trained in hydrogen technologies.

The agreement supports India’s broader National Green Hydrogen Mission, which envisions the country as a global hub for hydrogen production and export by 2030. Punjab’s active participation through PEDA will help position the state as a regional leader in clean fuel innovation and implementation.

The partnership with IISc, one of India’s leading research institutions, brings scientific expertise and advanced research capabilities to the initiative. IISc’s experience in renewable technologies and hydrogen systems will provide critical technical support for pilot projects in the state.

PEDA plans to facilitate on-ground deployment of green hydrogen pilot projects across industrial and mobility sectors. These projects are expected to showcase hydrogen’s potential as a clean alternative to fossil fuels in powering heavy industries and public transport.

The collaboration also focuses on fostering academic and industry partnerships to accelerate hydrogen adoption. Universities, startups, and energy companies in Punjab will be encouraged to participate in R&D, creating a vibrant innovation ecosystem around green hydrogen.

Officials stated that the initiative would contribute significantly to reducing Punjab’s carbon footprint, improving air quality, and creating new economic opportunities in the clean energy sector. It aligns with the state’s goal of achieving energy security through renewable diversification.

With this MoU, Punjab takes a decisive step toward integrating hydrogen into its renewable energy roadmap. The PEDA–IISc collaboration not only strengthens scientific cooperation but also sets the foundation for sustainable, large-scale green hydrogen development in northern India.
