PM Surya Ghar Yojana Achieves 4.9 GW Rooftop Solar Amid Challenges, Only 13% of Target Completed – EQ
In Short : India’s PM Surya Ghar Yojana has added 4.9 GW of residential rooftop solar capacity, with over 57.9 lakh applications submitted. However, only 13% of the target—1 crore systems—has been achieved. Challenges include delayed subsidy disbursement, low consumer awareness, financing hurdles, and fragmented supply chains. Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Rajasthan are leading, while other states lag behind.
In Detail : India’s PM Surya Ghar Yojana (PMSGY) has added 4.9 GW of residential rooftop solar capacity as of July 2025, marking a significant step in promoting clean energy adoption across households.
The scheme has received over 57.9 lakh applications, demonstrating substantial public interest in transitioning to solar power. However, the pace of installations remains below target.
Despite these efforts, only 13.1% of the ambitious goal of 1 crore rooftop solar systems has been achieved, highlighting challenges in scaling up capacity to meet the 30 GW target by FY2027.
A major hurdle has been the slow disbursement of subsidies. Only 14.1% of the allocated ₹65,700 crore has been released, affecting the ability of applicants to complete installations promptly.
Other challenges include low consumer awareness, difficulty accessing financing, and fragmented supply chains, which have resulted in a conversion rate of just 22.7% for applications received.
State-wise performance varies widely. Gujarat leads with 1,491 MW installed, followed by Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Rajasthan, reflecting effective strategies in these regions.
In contrast, states like Madhya Pradesh are lagging, having installed only 627 MW, showing the need for tailored approaches to overcome regional obstacles.
Experts recommend enhancing consumer education, streamlining financing options, improving supply chain logistics, and accelerating subsidy disbursement to boost installations and meet targets.
The PM Surya Ghar Yojana remains a critical initiative in India’s renewable energy strategy, and addressing these challenges is essential to achieving the 30 GW rooftop solar goal and advancing sustainable energy adoption nationwide.
