In Detail : Porsche has launched a pilot project to recycle high-voltage batteries and recover valuable raw materials, aiming to establish a closed-loop supply chain. As the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) grows, so does the need for responsible disposal and reuse of battery components. The initiative focuses on reducing dependency on raw material imports while minimising environmental impact. In the long run, Porsche plans to collaborate with external partners to create a widespread recycling network for high-voltage batteries.

Barbara Frenkel, Executive Board Member for Procurement at Porsche, stated, “With innovative recycling processes, we aim to reduce dependence on volatile and geopolitically unstable raw material markets. Circular economy is a core pillar of our sustainability strategy.”

Step-by-step approach to battery recycling

The pilot project is structured into three phases to test a recycling process suitable for large-scale implementation.

1.Extraction of black mass

The first phase involves dismantling high-voltage batteries from development vehicles and mechanically shredding them into “black mass.” This material contains essential battery raw materials such as nickel, cobalt, manganese, and lithium. So far, Porsche has produced approximately 65 tons of black mass.

2.Refinement and material recovery

In the next stage, the extracted black mass undergoes refining processes to separate its core raw materials. Porsche prioritises maintaining high-quality standards to ensure the recycled materials can be reused in new battery production.

3.Testing recycled battery cells

In the final phase, Porsche aims to manufacture high-voltage battery cells with a defined proportion of recycled materials. These cells will be tested for their potential use in future Porsche EV models. This approach aligns with the company’s commitment to sustainability by extending the lifecycle of battery raw materials and reducing the environmental footprint of EV production.

Aligning with regulatory changes and industry trends

Porsche’s battery recycling project is not just about resource efficiency but also about regulatory preparedness. The European Union plans to introduce stringent battery recycling requirements by 2031. By proactively adopting recycled materials, Porsche positions itself ahead of regulatory mandates while reinforcing its sustainability goals.
