In Short : By 2027, Prayagraj will install rooftop solar panels in 1 lakh homes under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Supported by central and state subsidies, the initiative aims to reduce electricity bills and promote clean energy. Certified vendors and net-metering will enable residents to generate and export surplus power, boosting local sustainability efforts.
In Detail : Prayagraj is set to witness a major clean energy transformation with the installation of rooftop solar panels in one lakh homes by 2027. The initiative is part of the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a central government scheme aimed at promoting solar energy in residential spaces across India.
The program provides financial support through combined central and state subsidies, significantly reducing the cost of solar installation for homeowners. Eligible beneficiaries can receive up to ₹1.08 lakh in subsidies for systems up to 3 kW capacity, making solar power more affordable for the general public.
Nearly 8.5 lakh homes in the district are eligible for solar installations. Authorities have set an initial target of 48,917 households for early adoption under the scheme. This phased rollout will gradually scale up to meet the one lakh target by March 2027.
The solar panels are being installed by vendors authorized by the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA). These vendors conduct technical inspections, and installation is overseen by engineers from the electricity department to ensure safety and performance standards.
Residents participating in the program will also benefit from net-metering, allowing them to send surplus electricity back to the grid. This not only helps reduce their power bills but also contributes clean energy to the state’s electricity supply.
Prayagraj is among the leading districts in Uttar Pradesh in terms of rooftop solar adoption. The success of this initiative is expected to further strengthen the state’s position in the national solar energy landscape and support its clean energy goals.
The scheme is also creating new opportunities for local entrepreneurs, especially young professionals entering the solar sector as certified vendors and installers. This surge in solar-related activity is driving job creation and skill development in the region.
Through this program, Prayagraj is making strides toward a more sustainable future. The initiative will reduce household electricity costs, encourage energy independence, and contribute meaningfully to India’s broader transition to renewable energy.
