The state will integrate solar, wind, and battery storage to provide round-the-clock clean power. TNGECL and TANGEDCO are spearheading projects, positioning Tamil Nadu as a leader in regional renewable energy development.

In Detail : Tamil Nadu has announced plans to add 10,000 MW of solar energy and 2,000 MW of wind power over the next five years. The initiative, unveiled by Transport and Electricity Minister S. S. Sivasankar, aims to strengthen the state’s clean energy capacity and create a South Asian Renewable Energy Corridor for regional power integration.

Currently, Tamil Nadu has over 20 GW of installed renewable capacity, including approximately 10 GW from wind energy. The state is leveraging its strong solar potential and extensive coastline to expand renewable generation while ensuring reliability and efficiency across its grid.

The Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL) is leading efforts to meet the state’s Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) targets by 2030. By increasing solar power generation and deploying Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), TNGECL plans to enhance grid stability and round-the-clock renewable power availability.

In the first phase, the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) has proposed establishing solar energy stations with around 4,000 MW capacity, supported by a 2,000 MW battery storage system. This combination will help balance intermittent generation and ensure consistent energy supply.

Integration of solar, wind, and storage is key to providing reliable clean energy. Tamil Nadu aims to optimize renewable energy utilization while reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Advanced grid management and storage solutions will allow the state to meet growing electricity demand sustainably.

These projects align with India’s broader renewable energy goals, supporting the country’s transition to a low-carbon, sustainable energy future. Tamil Nadu’s strategy highlights its role as a regional leader in clean energy adoption and innovation.
