Uttarakhand Seeks ₹750 Crore for Haridwar Ganga Corridor Underground Cabling Ahead of Kumbh 2027 – EQ

In Detail : Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has requested central assistance of approximately ₹750 crore for infrastructure upgrades in Haridwar’s Ganga Corridor ahead of the 2027 Kumbh Mela. The proposal focuses primarily on underground cabling of electrical networks and automation systems to enhance reliability and safety during the large-scale religious event.
The funding request has been structured in two phases, with around ₹325 crore proposed for the first phase and nearly ₹425 crore for the second phase. These investments aim to modernize power infrastructure, reduce overhead wiring, and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply across key pilgrimage zones.
Underground cabling is expected to significantly improve safety and aesthetics in the Ganga Corridor area. Removing overhead lines reduces risks during heavy footfall events, minimizes outage incidents, and supports better crowd management during peak bathing days of the Kumbh.
The project also includes automation of power distribution systems, enabling real-time monitoring and improved grid control. Such smart infrastructure will help authorities manage fluctuating demand, especially when millions of pilgrims gather in Haridwar during the religious congregation.
Apart from electrical upgrades, the state government also sought support for beautification of ghats and strengthening of urban infrastructure. Improvements in public amenities, lighting, and access routes are being planned to accommodate the expected surge in visitors.
The Chief Minister also proposed enhancing residential and civic facilities to improve the overall experience for pilgrims and tourists. These measures are aimed at creating long-term infrastructure that remains useful beyond the Kumbh event.
In addition to power infrastructure, proposals were discussed to improve regional connectivity. The state requested extension of the Regional Rapid Transit System from Meerut to Haridwar, along with development of a metro corridor linking Dehradun, Haridwar, and Rishikesh.
The Kumbh Mela scheduled for January 2027 is expected to draw massive crowds, requiring robust and resilient infrastructure. Authorities are prioritizing permanent upgrades such as underground utilities, improved mobility, and smart monitoring systems to ensure smooth event management.
Overall, the ₹750 crore proposal reflects a broader push to modernize Haridwar’s power and urban infrastructure.
