A team of students from IIT-B has designed a house which runs on zero net electricity and even generates extra energy storing it for the future use. The group will take part in Solar Decalthon 2018 which will take place in Dezhou, China.

The team is called ‘ SHUNYA’ and consists of students from engineering and architecture stream from IIT Bombay. It is the only team which has been selected from India to participate in the challenge.

The house is fully functional. It is well-furnished with three rooms, a kitchen, sufficient lighting and air conditioning. It runs on the energy collected from the roof top solar panels and feeds excess energy to a grid on sunny days.

The team, Sustainable Habitat for an Urbanizing Nation by its Young Aspirants (SHUNYA) has also panted a solar air heater which can reach up to maximum temperature of 220 degrees centigrade. The team earlier took part in the Solar Decathlon Europe, 2014 and received honorable mention in ‘sustainability’.

The members of the team are also taking part in the awareness activities to promote sustainable construction and to show that sustainable construction can be affordable to.
