Assam Accelerates Solar Growth with Rooftop, Agri-Voltaics, and Major Clean Energy Deals – EQ

In Detail : Assam has unveiled an ambitious plan to scale up its solar energy capacity to 3,500 MW, with a focus on rooftop solar systems and agri-voltaic solutions. This move is part of the state’s broader clean energy transition and commitment to the national renewable energy targets.
As a significant step, the state has issued tenders for 134 MW of rooftop solar capacity under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. This initiative aims to encourage residential participation in solar adoption, offering households a chance to contribute to and benefit from the clean energy shift.
To make solar adoption easier, Assam has simplified the installation process and introduced subsidies to reduce financial barriers. These measures are designed to attract more consumers and small-scale producers to participate in the solar market.
Beyond rooftops, Assam is promoting agri-voltaics to integrate solar power generation with agriculture. This dual-use model allows farmers to generate income from both crop cultivation and solar energy, enhancing rural sustainability and economic resilience.
In a bid to modernize its energy ecosystem, the state is exploring peer-to-peer energy trading platforms. Such systems would enable decentralized energy sharing and help optimize grid efficiency while empowering individual producers and consumers.
Assam’s solar drive has also attracted major investments, including a memorandum of understanding with Tata Power to develop 5,000 MW of clean energy projects. This collaboration is expected to significantly accelerate the state’s energy transition and position it as a green energy leader in the region.
