
NTPC Charts 20 GW Pumped Storage Roadmap to Power India’s Renewable Future – EQ

In Detail : NTPC Group is undertaking a major push into pumped storage development, with a target of 20 GW in projects across various Indian states. This effort is part of its broader strategy to support the country’s growing renewable energy capacity and ensure grid reliability.
The company plans to commission at least 5 GW of pumped storage capacity by the financial year 2031–32. These projects are seen as critical to balancing the intermittent nature of solar and wind energy, providing backup and frequency regulation support.
To advance this vision, NTPC has partnered with EDF India through a 50:50 joint venture. The collaboration will focus on developing both hydroelectric and pumped storage projects, leveraging EDF’s international expertise in clean energy and storage infrastructure.
Several of these projects are currently in different stages of feasibility assessment and government approvals. NTPC is actively engaged in discussions with various state governments to secure land and regulatory clearances for the proposed developments.
Pumped storage is gaining renewed interest in India as a viable long-duration energy storage solution. Unlike battery storage, it offers proven, large-scale capability for shifting power across peak and off-peak periods, which is essential for integrating more renewable sources into the national grid.
With this move, NTPC is aligning itself with national goals to enhance energy security while reducing carbon emissions. The group’s long-term strategy includes a growing portfolio of sustainable and flexible energy systems, crucial for India’s clean energy transition.
