In Short : Coimbatore district is intensifying efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, reviewing initiatives like solar panel installations, EV promotion, tree plantation, and water body restoration. Led by the District Collector, officials discussed strategies to cut emissions and expand green infrastructure. The district leads Tamil Nadu in green space per capita and aims to scale its environmental sustainability model further.

In Detail : The Coimbatore District Climate Change Mission Committee recently met at the collectorate to review ongoing efforts toward achieving carbon neutrality. The meeting was chaired by District Collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar and included officials from various departments such as the corporation, forest, and public works.

Key areas discussed included reducing greenhouse gas emissions and accelerating the district’s shift toward green energy. Strategies such as promoting electric vehicles, renewable energy adoption, and biodegradable packaging were among the priorities highlighted during the session.

Officials emphasized the need to install solar panels in public spaces such as lakes, farmers’ markets, and government warehouses. These installations aim to harness clean energy from underutilized spaces and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Environmental restoration efforts also featured prominently in the discussions. The district is working on rejuvenating water bodies, expanding tree plantation drives, strengthening solid waste management, and implementing rainwater harvesting systems.

These actions align with Tamil Nadu’s goal of making Coimbatore the first carbon-neutral district by 2050. This target was announced by the state environment minister as part of the broader state climate strategy.

On World Environment Day this year, nearly 1.5 lakh saplings were planted across the district. This large-scale initiative underlines Coimbatore’s commitment to enhancing biodiversity and green cover.

The district currently offers 46.6 square meters of green space per capita, the highest in Tamil Nadu and nearly double the national average. Officials aim to expand this further through Miyawaki forests and designated plantation zones.

The district’s long-term climate action plan also includes sustainable urban planning, adoption of solar power, clean mobility options, and public infrastructure improvements to support emission reductions.

Coimbatore is coordinating closely with multiple departments under the guidance of the Climate Change Mission Committee to implement and monitor these efforts. Regular reviews and collaboration are seen as essential for achieving carbon neutrality.
