Residents of south Mumbai are pushing for increasing the use of non-conventional sources of energy by installing solar panels and other means to produce green energy. The Cuffe Parade Residents Association (CPRA), in a first, have planned for a garden in a two-acre plot which will be operated only using green energy. To achieve this, the CPRA garden will be installed with solar panels and batteries.

Apart from producing green energy, the residents are also attending workshops to spread awareness on creating clean sources of energy, and measures on how to reduce the unnecessary wastage of electricity.

“The power generated from the solar energy panels will be used to water trees in the garden through sprinklers. This will help us save a lot of energy. Moreover, we will also use solar energy to illuminate street lights in the locality,” said Padmakar Nandekar, secretary general, CPRA. “We will also be promoting and urging residents to reduce the wastage of electricity so that we are able to wipe out our carbon footprints and help in protecting the environment,” added Nandekar.

Moreover, the residents have also taken it upon themselves to use LED lights for all electricity purposes in their homes.

“We ensure that the electricity consumption of our homes is less. With two to three rooms in a flat, we ensure that the electricity consumption is decreased. We have also asked the society’s committee members to spread awareness on how to use less electricity,” said a committee member of CPRA.

The residents have also started adopting greener ways to recycle waste and are also planning to set up bio-gas plants if they get the space to implement it. The residents plan to set up small workshops for children and senior citizens to spread awareness about greener ways to survive and ensure that carbon emissions in to the atmosphere are reduced.

“We believe in go green initiatives and we also ensure that we participate with government agencies to promote and execute the initiatives which will help the environment, leading to less pollution on this planet. It is the responsibility of every citizen to initiate greener ways to help keep the environment clean and green.”
