In Detail : Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal met Norway’s Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy, Marianne Sivertsen Næss, on the sidelines of Nor-Shipping 2025 in Oslo to deepen maritime cooperation. Their discussion centered on exploring opportunities in ocean renewable energy, particularly in offshore wind and tidal power, with a shared vision for a sustainable future.

India and Norway acknowledged each other’s strengths in the maritime sector. While Norway brings advanced technology and expertise in green shipping and renewable energy, India contributes with a robust shipbuilding industry and growing maritime infrastructure. The leaders expressed mutual interest in developing joint ventures to combine these capabilities.

The dialogue also covered potential collaboration in ship recycling and circular economy practices. India, with its globally recognized ship recycling yards, and Norway, with its environmental standards, see a strong partnership possibility in setting new benchmarks for green ship dismantling and resource reuse.

Both countries agreed on the importance of enhancing training and capacity-building programs for seafarers. They emphasized cooperation in maritime education to improve global standards and ensure safe, sustainable, and skilled manpower for the international shipping industry.

Sustainable fisheries and ocean governance also featured in the talks. India and Norway plan to work together in managing marine resources efficiently, promoting biodiversity conservation, and addressing challenges posed by climate change in coastal and oceanic zones.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to reinforce bilateral relations in maritime innovation and ocean-based industries. Both ministers expressed optimism that the cooperation will boost their shared commitment to a cleaner, greener, and more resilient Blue Economy.
