Indian Oil Launches Nation’s Largest Green Hydrogen Plant to Power Cleaner Future – EQ

In Detail : Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) is taking a major step toward clean energy by establishing India’s largest green hydrogen plant at its Panipat refinery in Haryana. The plant is designed to produce 10,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, making it a key project in IOCL’s decarbonization strategy and India’s broader clean energy transition.
The facility will replace fossil-based hydrogen with green hydrogen in the refinery’s operations, reducing carbon emissions significantly. Green hydrogen will be generated through the electrolysis of water, powered entirely by renewable energy. This makes the production process sustainable and environmentally friendly.
Construction and operations of the plant will be handled by Larsen & Toubro (L\&T), which has won the contract under a build-own-operate model. The cost of green hydrogen from the plant has been finalized at INR 397 per kilogram, making it competitively priced compared to traditional hydrogen sources.
The project is slated for completion by December 2027. It aligns closely with the goals of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and IOCL’s commitment to achieving net-zero operational emissions by 2046. The plant is expected to run continuously, ensuring a stable supply of clean hydrogen for various industrial applications.
In addition to this project, Indian Oil is also scaling up its renewable energy portfolio. The company recently approved an investment of INR 1,086 crore to develop 4.3 GW of renewable energy capacity through its subsidiary, Terra Clean. This further strengthens IOCL’s commitment to sustainable energy practices.
By integrating green hydrogen into its existing operations, IOCL is setting a benchmark for the Indian energy sector. The Panipat project serves as a model for the role of renewable technologies in transforming traditional industries and contributing meaningfully to India’s clean energy targets.
