India’s EV Surge Accelerates in May 2025, Led by Two-Wheelers and State-Level Momentum – EQ

In Short : India recorded 1.79 lakh EV sales in May 2025, with electric two-wheelers leading at 56% share. TVS, Bajaj, and Ola dominated this segment. E3Ws and E4Ws also saw strong growth, while electric bus sales rose 19% month-on-month. Uttar Pradesh topped EV registrations among states, reflecting India’s accelerating transition to electric mobility across all vehicle categories.

In Detail : India witnessed a sharp rise in electric vehicle (EV) registrations in May 2025, reaching 1,79,522 units. This marks a notable month-on-month increase in adoption, signaling strong momentum in the country’s shift towards electric mobility. The surge was primarily driven by the electric two-wheeler segment, which maintained its dominant position.

High-speed electric two-wheelers (HS E2Ws) accounted for 55.85% of all EV sales in May, with 1,00,266 units sold, reflecting a 9% rise from April. Among manufacturers, TVS Motor Company led the segment with a 24.49% market share, followed by Bajaj Auto at 21.71% and Ola Electric at 18.45%. This segment continues to be the backbone of India’s EV transition.

Passenger electric three-wheelers (E3Ws) also saw a steady uptick, registering 55,623 units—up 6% from April and 18% year-on-year. Mahindra Last Mile Mobility emerged as the leader with a 10.8% share, closely trailed by Bajaj Auto at 10.55%. TVS Motor’s entry into this segment also showed promise with over 30% month-on-month growth.

In the cargo E3W space, 10,394 units were sold in May, marking a 5% month-on-month and 34% year-on-year growth. Mahindra retained its leadership in this segment with a 5.64% share. A standout performer was Saravana Engineering Works, which saw a 430% spike in monthly sales, indicating the growing demand in last-mile delivery and logistics sectors.

Electric passenger vehicle (E-car) sales reached 12,193 units in May. Tata Motors dominated with 35.42% market share, followed by MG Motors at 30.61% and Mahindra & Mahindra at 21.36%. BYD also showed significant progress, posting a 42% increase in monthly sales. This category continues to gain traction among urban consumers seeking sustainable alternatives.

Among Indian states, Uttar Pradesh led EV registrations with a 21.25% share, followed by Maharashtra (10.92%), Karnataka (8.61%), Tamil Nadu (6.57%), and Delhi (5.65%). The data, collected from 1,385 Regional Transport Offices across 35 states and union territories, reflects the country’s broad and deepening commitment to green mobility.
