In Short : Singapore’s renewable energy usage reached a record 2.58% of its power mix in May 2025, driven by rising solar output and growing renewable imports. Solar generation saw its sharpest monthly increase since March 2024, while renewable imports hit 122.7 GWh this year. The milestone supports Singapore’s long-term goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

In Detail : Singapore has achieved a significant milestone in its energy transition, with renewable energy accounting for a record 2.58% of its total electricity mix in May 2025. This marks the highest share of renewables ever recorded in the city-state’s power sector and highlights its growing efforts to decarbonize its energy system.

The sharp rise was driven by a notable increase in solar energy generation. According to data from the Energy Market Authority, solar output saw its steepest month-on-month jump since March 2024. This growth comes as Singapore continues to expand rooftop and floating solar installations across residential, industrial, and utility-scale projects.

In addition to domestic solar growth, renewable energy imports also played a key role in reaching this milestone. May marked the third consecutive month of increased imports, with a total of 122.7 GWh of renewable electricity brought into the country so far in 2025. These imports come mainly through regional cross-border agreements aimed at sharing clean power across Southeast Asia.

Singapore’s limited land area has made local renewable deployment challenging, pushing authorities to look beyond borders. The ongoing rise in renewable imports is a result of partnerships with neighboring countries, enabling the city-state to tap into larger and more diverse sources of green energy.

The progress aligns with Singapore’s broader energy transition strategy, which includes achieving net zero emissions by 2050. Authorities have focused on diversifying the energy mix, investing in solar, regional power grids, and green hydrogen as part of a multi-pronged approach to sustainability.

This record-high renewable contribution, though still modest compared to global standards, marks a meaningful step in Singapore’s long-term energy goals. As solar deployment and clean energy imports continue to scale, the country is steadily moving toward a lower-carbon, more resilient power system.
