A new report from Navigant Research illustrates where to place direct current (DC) charging stations in the United States in a staged rollout, using a series of maps that show coverage for long-distance drivers of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) along the East and West Coasts and throughout the country.

Over the next 10 years, the U.S. BEV population is expected to grow rapidly, with long-range BEVs becoming an increasingly large percentage of total BEVs in use. Drivers of these long-range BEVs are expected to boost demand for DC fast charging at much higher power levels, and stakeholders have begun developing plans to deploy networks of high-power DC fast chargers throughout the United States. Click to tweet: According to a new report from @NavigantRSRCH, 95 stations would enable BEVs to travel long distance along the East and West Coasts and across the nation, and 408 stations would create a comprehensive network for the United States.

“Nationwide access to high-power fast charging can be achieved with several hundred stations, but this requires collaboration from automakers, charging networks, and utilities,” says Lisa Jerram, principal research analyst with Navigant Research. “It is important that individual stations be placed in optimal locations for the greatest benefit, and that they be linked together in a single network for ease of use by BEV drivers.”Navigant Research’s analysis serves as a benchmark for automakers and charging equipment companies, as well as utilities and government agencies, looking to develop a nationwide fast charging network in the United States. Navigant’s methodology allows the data to be adapted to provide a more granular look at potential DC charging needs in specific regions.

The report, DC Charging Map for the United States, provides a benchmark for stakeholders as they plan to build a DC fast charging network across the United States. Using publicly available census and travel data and customized BEV forecasts, Navigant Research has developed a set of maps showing where to place DC charging stations in a staged rollout. The report also features maps of proposed low power DC charging deployments designed to meet the needs of drivers within the major MSAs of the United States.
