In Short : ICA India and NSEFI (National Solar Energy Federation of India) collaborate to address challenges in the implementation of solar DC cable standards. This partnership reflects efforts to overcome hurdles and enhance the efficiency and safety of solar energy installations in India, contributing to the growth of the solar sector.

In Detail : The roundtable discussions deliberated on the challenges associated with the adoption of the solar DC cable standard, across the various phases of planning, design, and installation in Solar PV systems.

The International Copper Association India (ICA India) and the National Solar Energy Federation of India (NSEFI) jointly organised a roundtable discussion on Quality Control Order (QCO) mandates for solar DC cables in New Delhi. The primary focus of this gathering was to deliberate on the challenges associated with the adoption of the solar DC cable standard, across the various phases of planning, design, and installation in solar PV systems.

The roundtable brought together industry leaders and government officials, including Mr. Chaitanya Kumar Varma, Former Special Director General at Central Public Works Department (CPWD) Government of India, Dr. Ashish Kumar from DPIIT, Mr. Ashok Kumar Rajput from CEA, and Mr. Manas Kundu, Advisor (Energy Regulatory Affairs) at ICA India, among others. The audience included cable manufacturers and solar power project developers.

The roundtable addressed challenges encountered during the implementation of the mandatory solar DC cable standard and sought collaborative efforts from industry stakeholders to propose viable solutions. The intention was to present these recommendations to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

Solar DC cables play a vital role in solar PV systems, transmitting direct current from photovoltaic panels to inverters and the electrical grid. The growth of solar PV systems in the country necessitates a focus on the quality and safety of their components. Non-standard cables pose safety hazards, impact system performance, and result in costly maintenance. Regulatory authorities have mandated solar DC cable standards through quality control orders to address these concerns.

While quality product and installation standards exist, there is an opportunity to enhance awareness in the solar PV industry. This gap has led to the continued use of non-compliant or substandard materials, posing risks to safety and the environment. Bridging this awareness gap is crucial for the long-term success and adoption of solar energy.

Dr. Ashish Kumar from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) emphasised the role of Quality Control in ensuring quality in the Indian manufacturing system. He highlighted the importance of maintaining quality, particularly in products where safety is paramount.

Shri Ashok Kumar Rajput from the Central Electricity Authority of India (CEA) stressed the need for Quality Control awareness programmes and focused on promoting the Quality Control Order.
