In Short : Group Surya has won a Rs 102 crore contract to develop a solar-hydrogen microgrid in Ladakh, aimed at providing clean and reliable energy to the region. The project will integrate solar power with hydrogen energy storage to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply, supporting Ladakh’s transition to sustainable energy and reducing its carbon footprint.

In Detail : In a key step towards green energy, Group Surya has secured a Rs 102 crore contract for a Solar-Hydrogen BESS-based microgrid at Chushul, Ladakh. This project, in partnership with NTPC, the Indian Army, and NTPC REL, aims to provide reliable, clean energy to defense forces stationed in remote areas under extreme conditions.

A historic move for defense energy security

The project was inaugurated virtually by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, marking a significant milestone in India’s defense and renewable energy sectors. The solar-hydrogen microgrid, valued at Rs 102 crore, will generate 200 kW of continuous power year-round.

It is designed to withstand temperatures as low as -30°C at 4,400 meters above sea level, ensuring reliable energy in one of the harshest environments.

A step towards sustainability and energy independence

This solar-hydrogen initiative aims to replace diesel generators, reducing carbon emissions by 1,500 tonnes annually. By utilising Ladakh’s abundant solar energy, the project enhances energy security, minimising fuel dependency in strategic defense areas. It is also a key part of India’s move toward decarbonising its energy infrastructure.

Group Surya honouring the legacy of heroes

Located near the historic site of the 1962 Battle of Rezang La, the project holds special significance. Surya International’s Managing Director, Kamlesh Kumar Singh, highlighted the challenges faced by soldiers in these tough terrains, emphasising that this initiative is a tribute to their bravery and sacrifices.

Group Surya’s commitment extends to maintaining the microgrid to ensure reliable energy support for India’s soldiers stationed in these remote locations.

Surya International’s success with this project further cements its leadership in the sustainable energy sector, following previous hydrogen-focused initiatives.
