July 18, 2017 – Abengoa (MCE: ABG/P:SM), the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability in the energy and environment sectors, has successfully concluded the electrification of more than 200 kilometres of railway line in India for Central Organization of Railways Electrification, a public agency of the Ministry of Railways. The project covered the design, supply, installation, tests and commissioning of the 25 kV overhead wire, including the foundation and installation works of structures, and the necessary auxiliary equipment for the Nallapadu-Diguvametta line, located in the heart of the State of Andra Pradesh, in the south of the country. The railway line, currently operational, has a total of 23 stations along the length of this section of railway, and will provide means of transportation to an area of more than 3 million people. The electrification of the railway line will help to save diesel costs, besides curbing pollution and reducing the travelling time between both cities.

This is the second railway electrification project undertaken by Abengoa in India, where it has completed more than 500 kilometres of 25 kV alternating current electrification, thus establishing itself as one of the country’s key players in the sector. When its operational length is taken into account, the Republic of India has one of the largest railway networks in the world. With the completion of this project, Abengoa consolidates its leading role in developing railway projects at an international level. Presently, the company is developing construction work on the 450 km high-speed line between Mecca and Medina, in Saudi Arabia, as well as a further project in southern England that entails the electrification of 250 km of railway. Abengoa has developed more than 1,000 km of high voltage transmission lines in India alone over the last 20 years. It has also built one of the largest reverse osmosis desalination plants in the country, located in Chennai, with a 100,000 m3/day capacity.
