Canadian clean energy platform Amp Energy has been selected as the lead developer for the Cape Hardy Green Hydrogen Project in South Australia, where it proposes to build a 5-GW electrolyser and associated green hydrogen and ammonia production over the next decade, it was announced on Wednesday.

Amp, a portfolio company of private equity firm The Carlyle Group, was selected by Iron Road Ltd (ASX:IRD) after a three-month competitive offer-to-bid process. Iron Road is developing an iron ore mining project on the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. The project proposes a deep-water port at Cape Hardy that has the potential to become a hydrogen hub. The proposed Cape Hardy port and industrial precinct is supported by a AUD-25-million (USD 16.6m/EUR 15.3m) grant commitment by the Australian government.

The companies will now start a nine-month exclusivity period, during which a detailed project schedule and scope of work will be developed.

“After running an earlier market sounding and thorough Expression of Interest process, Iron Road was conscious of reducing planning and development complexity by avoiding a crowded playing field at Cape Hardy. We have selected Amp as a single lead developer who we expect will assemble additional consortium partners in collaboration with Iron Road,” explained Iron Road chief executive Larry Ingle.

In parallel, Amp continues to develop its nearby wind and solar projects to support the proposed Cape Hardy hydrogen scheme.

It is estimated that the 5-GW project will need about 410 hectares (1,013 acres), or around one-third of Iron Road’s gulf-side land.
