Lagos, Nigeria: Azuri Technologies, a leading provider of pay-as-you-go solar home solutions to off-grid households in Africa, has joined forces with the Imperial College London to inspire young school in Nigeria to become the country’s future engineers.

The 5-day workshop entitled Creative Futures Nigeria is the brainchild of Dr Sunday Popo-Ola of Imperial College London and introduces school students from all backgrounds to the potential of science, technology, engineering and mathematics through a series of activities that test their imagination and skills.

“Creative Futures is designed to inspire pupils to achieve their full potential and encourage them to think about science and higher education. It is an interactive learning experience bringing together 9 to16-year-old pupils, role models, mentors and inspirational speakers,” explains Dr Sunday Popo-Ola.

Azuri General Manager for West Africa, Vera Nwanze said: “Azuri is delighted to be involved with such a project, designed to inspire Nigeria’s future engineers. During the workshop, students will have the opportunity to see and test cutting-edge solar technology that is connecting hundreds of thousands of off-grid households to the modern digital world.”

In Nigeria, Azuri solar home systems have been installed in over 20,000 off-grid households located in 12 Northern states of the country as part of the office of the Vice President’s rural electrification intervention “Beyond the Grid”. Further pilots are being embarked for commercial installations across the country to deliver clean, sustainable and reliable solar home solutions to the over 70 million underserved Nigerians living in off-grid communities.

In addition to gaining insight into how the latest solar technology is changing lives in Nigeria, students will take part in challenges involving construction, mechanics and robotics in an effort to inspire them to become innovators of the future.

Workshops will be held in two locations in Kwara State. The first workshop, taking place this week, will include students from 6 primary schools from Esie, followed by another workshop in Apado Town starting 14 August.

Azuri entered the solar market in Africa in 2012 and is now one of the leading providers of pay-as-you-go solar power lighting and TV systems, operating in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Nigeria.

From home lighting to satellite TV, Azuri-designed solutions deliver world-class performance and life-changing technology at an affordable price for customers who live away from mains power.

Azuri’s vision is to create a level playing field where all African consumers can access and benefit from the digital economy, wherever they live.

CAPTION: During the workshop Azuri Technologies is helping students from primary schools across Apado Town gain insight into the solar technology changing the lives of off-grid families across the country.
