Brunei to boost solar project development, says energy minister

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN : Brunei is looking at developing small and medium-scale solar projects that suit the country’s environment and conditions, as the country saw an increase in the usage of green and renewable energy, Haji Mat Suny, Brunei’s Minister of Energy said.

According to local daily the Borneo Bulletin, the minister said during a recent panel session at Singapore International Energy Week 2020 that solar technologies are already being utilised in Brunei to supplement the rural population’s energy supply.

“The Ministry of Energy will continue its efforts towards reducing energy intensity and to increase the total share of renewable energy in Brunei’s power generation,” the minister said.

The minister also reiterated the importance of gas as an accessible, affordable source of cleaner energy in the region.

The Ministry of Energy will closely monitor the development of energy innovation and technology to support the national climate agenda and global efforts for decarbonisation, he added.

Meanwhile, Brunei reported no new case of Covid-19 with the national tally of cases standing at 148.

It marked the 7th consecutive day without new cases since Oct 22, when the country recorded an imported case from Kuala Lumpur.

According to Brunei’s Ministry of Health, one more recovery was recorded, bringing the total number of recovered cases to 144. There is still one active case being treated at the National Isolation Center.

Meanwhile, currently there are 297 individuals who are undergoing mandatory isolation at the monitoring centers provided by the government, who have arrived in the country after traveling abroad.

There have been three deaths that resulted from Covid-19 in Brunei. – Xinhua.
