THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Solar power plants in select BSNL buildings across Kerala will be ready for commissioning in February. Solar power plants of 505-kilowatt peak (kWp) capacity are being commissioned in BSNL buildings, utilizing the rooftops.

The first grid interactive solar power plant with 65 kWp capacity was inaugurated at the administrative building in Manacaud here last week by P T Mathew, Chief General Manager, Kerala circle.

Plants will also come up in 12 other BSNL buildings across the state. This project has been conceptualised in RESCO (Renewable Energy Service Company) Model with zero investment from BSNL, in which capital investment is made by the solar developer.

The solar power generated will be made available to BSNL, at a fixed rate for the next 25 years. The other major attraction of the project is that BSNL has the right to open access for wheeling the electricity generated in excess to the grid and can be utilised in another BSNL building. The endeavour cuts down the electricity charges as well as reduce carbon emission. 505 kWp solar power plant can generate approximately 7.4 lakh units of pollution-free electricity per year. This will, in turn, reduce about 600 tonnes of carbon emission.
